Our Journey So Far

  • Establishment with a Clear Social Purpose (2017)
Mythri Co-operative Mutually Aided Credit Society Limited (Mythri MACCS Limited) was established in 2017 with the objective of supporting individuals working or who have worked in print and electronic media, a sector largely marked by uncertainty and insecurity.
  • Early Challenges and Lack of Policy Clarity
In its initial years, the Society faced significant challenges due to the absence of clear policies and recognition regarding the status of electronic media professionals. This ambiguity directly affected membership growth and institutional support.
  • Principled Stand on Independence
With the existence of more than five journalists’ unions, there was considerable pressure on the Society to affiliate with one or the other. Mythri firmly rejected such affiliations, choosing instead to remain independent and inclusive, with a clear commitment to serve all media persons irrespective of union, group, or ideology.
  • Resistance and Fear Among Media Professionals
The Society’s independent stand appeared to unsettle some influential union leaders. As a result, many media professionals kept themselves away from Mythri, possibly out of fear or uncertainty, as the Society was not aligned with their respective unions. Despite this, Mythri stood firm on its founding principles and values.
  • Limited Membership and Innovative Survival Measures
Due to low membership, the Society adopted a thrift-based model to sustain itself. Members contributed small thrift amounts every financial year, which were responsibly managed and returned to them at the end of the financial year (March), ensuring trust and transparency.
  • Severe Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating impact, particularly on print and electronic media workers. Nearly 95% of media professionals are not permanent employees and hence are not entitled to organizational benefits, job security, or social protection. This crisis further restricted membership growth and financial strength.
  • Harsh Retirement Reality in Media Sector
Even retired media professionals receive extremely low EPF pensions, ranging between ₹500 and ₹3,000 per month. With no meaningful retirement benefits or institutional support, the vulnerability of media workers became increasingly evident.
  • Prolonged Struggle Until 2024
These adverse conditions continued until 2024, keeping the Society small in size and resources. However, the determination and unity of the existing members kept the Society alive and functional.
  • Turning Point: Beginning of Loan Sanctions
In 2024, members collectively decided to begin sanctioning loans, even with the limited funds available. This marked a crucial turning point, reflecting confidence, mutual trust, and a renewed commitment to the Society’s objectives.
  • Renewed Momentum and Growing Confidence
The Society has now begun to gain momentum. A positive future is visible, driven by the dedication, commitment, and collective responsibility of its members.
  • Recognition of Ground Realities
Realizing that financial assistance alone is insufficient—given the lack of job security, retirement benefits, and limited government support (restricted mostly to health cards for accredited journalists)—the Society reassessed its role. The situation of non-accredited media workers was found to be even more alarming.
  • Strategic Shift Towards Sustainable Livelihoods
In response, Mythri has decided to focus on creating sustainable income opportunities. Plans are underway to establish or support small and cottage-level production houses, media centers, independent media houses, YouTube channels, e-papers, and other viable business ventures.
  • Future Programmes and Vision
  1. Development of Society-supported media and production platforms for members
  2.  Promotion of self-employment and collective entrepreneurship
  3.  Skill development and training in digital media and content creation
  4. Financial literacy and savings awareness programmes.
  5. Gradual strengthening of the Society’s financial base to expand loan and welfare services
  • Looking Ahead with Hope
Though the journey has been difficult, Mythri MACCS Limited has remained resilient and principled. With renewed clarity, evolving strategies, and the unwavering commitment of its members, the Society now looks forward to a future of stability, growth, and meaningful support for media professionals—without fear, affiliation, or discrimination.
